KiwiSaver advice that's built around you, not a default fund
For many New Zealanders, KiwiSaver becomes one of their largest assets, yet many people are sitting in a fund they chose years ago, or never chose at all. Over decades, the right fund, fees and contribution rate can make a substantial difference to your balance at retirement.
We give independent advice on getting the most from your KiwiSaver, and can build a fully custom KiwiSaver portfolio using ETFs, direct shares and managed funds, tailored to your goals, timeframe and wider finances.
Is this you?
- You have a meaningful KiwiSaver balance and aren't sure your fund still suits you.
- You're approaching retirement and want your KiwiSaver to work alongside your other investments.
- You're a business owner or high earner wondering how KiwiSaver fits into your broader plan.
- You'd like more control over how your KiwiSaver is invested.
- You simply want advice from someone who isn't selling their own fund.
Is your fund right for you?
KiwiSaver funds range from conservative to aggressive, and the right choice depends on how long until you need the money and how comfortable you are with ups and downs. Someone with 30 years to go may be poorly served by a conservative fund, while someone about to buy a first home or retire may need more stability. We review your fund against your timeframe and goals.
Fees, tax and contributions
Fees. Small differences in annual fees add up over decades. We look at what you're paying and whether you're getting value for it.
Your PIR. KiwiSaver is taxed at your prescribed investor rate (PIR) of 10.5%, 17.5% or 28%. If your PIR is set too high, you overpay tax. If it's set too low, you may face a tax bill at the end of the year. It's worth checking it's correct.
Contribution rates and government contributions. The rules have changed recently. From 1 July 2025, the government contribution halved to 25 cents for each dollar you contribute, up to $260.72 a year, and it isn't paid to people earning over $180,000. Default employee and employer contribution rates rose from 3% to 3.5% on 1 April 2026, and are due to rise to 4% on 1 April 2028. We help you understand how these changes affect you, and whether contributing more than the minimum makes sense for your situation.
Custom KiwiSaver portfolios
Some KiwiSaver schemes let you choose your own investments rather than a standard fund. Where it suits you, we can build and manage a KiwiSaver portfolio using ETFs, direct shares and managed funds, designed to fit your wider investment strategy rather than sitting in isolation.
KiwiSaver as you approach retirement
From 65, you can generally withdraw some or all of your KiwiSaver savings, but you don't have to. Many people keep much of it invested and draw on it gradually. We help you plan how KiwiSaver fits into your overall retirement income, alongside NZ Super and your other investments.
How we help
As an independent adviser, we don't have our own products to sell, so our advice is focused entirely on what suits you. We will:
- Review your current fund, fees, PIR and contribution strategy
- Recommend changes that fit your whole financial picture, not just your KiwiSaver
- Build and manage a custom KiwiSaver portfolio where it suits you
- Plan how to use KiwiSaver for a first home or in retirement
- Review your KiwiSaver with you regularly as your life changes
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I'm in the right KiwiSaver fund?
It depends mainly on how long until you need the money and how comfortable you are with ups and downs. A review looks at your fund type, fees and timeframe together.
What is a PIR and why does it matter?
Your prescribed investor rate (10.5%, 17.5% or 28%) sets the tax rate on your KiwiSaver returns. If it's wrong, you may overpay tax or face a bill at year end, so it's worth checking.
Can I choose my own investments in KiwiSaver?
Some schemes allow you to select your own investments, such as ETFs and shares. We can build and manage a custom KiwiSaver portfolio where that suits you.
Should I contribute more than the minimum?
It depends on your income, other savings and goals. KiwiSaver is locked in until 65 (except for a first home and some special circumstances), so we weigh flexibility against the benefits of saving more.
Can I get independent KiwiSaver advice?
Yes. Because we are independent and don't have our own KiwiSaver fund, our advice focuses on what suits you, whichever provider that involves.
